Phil pledges backing for residents in tip battle

24 March 2009

Phil Woolas MP is shocked by the proposal that the  controversial landfill site, High Moor, could be extended to accommodate more waste, shocked anti-tip campaigners learned today.

The revelation — in a 74-page public consultation document — names High Moor in Scouthead as one of the most “potentially suitable” sites in Greater Manchester for disposing “residual waste” — smelly rubbish left over from recycling.

The tip’s current boundary could be moved to incorporate another section of land which, in turn, would extend High Moor’s working life.

Phil said: “For years, I’ve been backing the fight to sort out the serious problems at the current tip. Residents want High Moor to close. They do not want its life extending in any way. They are right.”

Phil writes to Greater Manchester Geological Unit (GMGU) calling for rethink on High Moor tip extension

24 March 2009

Phil Woolas MP has written saying:

“I write to object in the strongest possible terms to your proposed option to extend this landfill site at High Moor in my constituency. I and the residents cannot contemplate the situation you suggest that a further 1.8 million tons of residual waste could be tipped at a site that is over 1000 ft above sea level. The stench and odours that continue to emanate from this site are quite frankly unbearable and make people physically sick. The stench is not just apparent near the site, hundreds of residents living up to one and a half miles away in the valley bottom of the River Tame in the Saddleworth villages find the stench unbearable at times and are not infrequently confined to their homes with doors and windows firmly closed.”

Phil Woolas MP welcomes decision not to extend tipping at High Moor

22 June 2009

Phil Woolas MP said "The residents of Scouthead and the Saddleworth villages will be breathing a collective sigh of relief now that the decision has been taken not to extend High Moor Quarry.

It was pure madness to contemplate extending this landfill site which has been a living hell for nearby residents for years because of the stench that plagues the area. I have said repeatedly that I and my constituents want the tip closing not extending.

Whoever had the bright idea to recommend extending the life of the tip was totally insensitive to the wishes of local residents who have had to suffer because of the nauseous odours which this tip has produced.”
